Google Business Profile optimisation: a step-by-step guide

For most local businesses, the Google Business Profile brings in more calls than the website does. It's also free, and most businesses only fill in half of it. Here's how to do it properly.

In short

To optimise a Google Business Profile, choose the most accurate primary category, add relevant secondary categories, fill in every field including services and attributes, upload real photos regularly, post updates weekly, ask every satisfied customer for a review and reply to all reviews, and keep your name, address and phone exactly consistent with your website and directories.

Step by step

Use your real business name

No keywords, no locations tacked on. "Seospidy Web Solution", not "Seospidy Best SEO Company South Delhi". Keyword-stuffed names are one of the most common reasons for suspensions.

Pick the right primary category

This is the most important choice on the profile. Choose the most specific category that describes your main business. Add secondary categories for other things you genuinely do. We use four: Internet marketing service, Marketing agency, Marketing consultant and Website designer.

Get your address and pin exactly right

Check the map pin sits on your actual entrance. In Delhi NCR, wrong pins are common and quietly hurt rankings.

Add every service

List services individually with short descriptions. They help Google match you to specific searches.

Fill in attributes and hours

Online appointments, on-site services, accessibility, payment options, plus special hours for holidays.

Upload real photos

Your storefront, interior, team and work. Add new ones regularly. Stock photos don't help.

Post weekly

Offers, updates, new work, events. Posts keep the profile active and give searchers more reasons to choose you.

Ask for reviews, and reply to all of them

Ask every happy customer, ideally with a direct link or QR code. Reply to every review, especially negative ones, calmly and helpfully.

Answer questions

Add common questions and answers to the Q&A yourself, and answer customer questions quickly.

Keep your details consistent everywhere

Your name, address and phone number should match exactly on your website, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook and anywhere else you're listed. Inconsistencies confuse Google and AI assistants about whether these are the same business.

Connect it to your website

Your website should show the same address and phone, embed your Google map, and carry LocalBusiness schema that matches the profile. We add the place ID and coordinates in the schema too. It's a small detail that helps Google treat your website and listing as one business.

Mistakes that get profiles suspended

  • Keywords in the business name
  • Virtual office or co-working addresses where you don't actually meet customers
  • Multiple listings for the same location
  • Fake or incentivised reviews
  • A service-area business showing an address it shouldn't

If your profile has been suspended, don't create a new one. Fix the cause and request reinstatement.

FAQ

Questions people ask us

How often should I post on my Google Business Profile?

Once a week is a good rhythm. Consistency matters more than volume.

Can I offer discounts for reviews?

No. Google's policies prohibit incentivised reviews, and India's consumer protection guidelines on fake reviews cover this too. Just ask genuinely satisfied customers.

Should I respond to fake negative reviews?

Yes, calmly and briefly, and report the review to Google if it breaks their policies.
